Make Time For Creativity: How Cooking, Guitar Playing, Even Being Clueless Awaken My Creativity?
When I was young, I was always in awe of creative people around me. I was fascinated by those who can draw because I couldn’t even make a star with perfect sides. I couldn’t sing nor dance. So I thought I wasn’t born with a talent for Creativity.
As I grew up, I realized creativity is not limited to arts or performance. Creativity is not simply defined by the talents you were born with. It is what you do out of your thoughts or imagination when you turn those ideas into a reality, the growth you experience throughout your journey, and the way you express yourself as you go on with life.
In my case, it was just recently when I recognized that I have the Creativity within me. Why? Because I had no idea that cooking relates to my Creativity until I started paying attention to it. When I recognized the small details I do, it boosted my confidence on how creative I am and embrace the talents I have.
My skills, talents, and life are all God’s given gifts. What I do is a gift back to my Creator, BUT it’s only when I fully embrace the Creativity HE has given to me.
Like me, you might have entertained the same thoughts that you are not creative, or worse, still believing up to now that you are just not. Here are some life-changing tips to help you embrace your Creativity.
1. Cook Your Way Through Creativity
Cooking is another form of self-expression. It has the most versatile art form and can engage different senses like taste, look, and smell.
When I cook, I enjoy the variety of colorful ingredients like carrots, red or green bell peppers, and a mixture of veggies and fruits —the natural colors, healthy nutrients, and delicious taste that evokes everyone to try it. I often mix different herbs and spices to make dishes flavourful. I love to put a twist in each meal and make sure each one is unique.
If you love cooking, continue to play around with it. Allow your creative side to flow and be proud of it! You are creating!
2. Expand Your Creativity Through Musical Instruments
Fifteen years ago, I wanted to learn how to play guitar. But life got busy. I had commitments and at the same time, excuses. I convinced myself I couldn’t do it. But recently, I challenged myself to upgrade my skills and the best way to start it is to address that desire I had a while ago.
I used the available resources for me like friends and online tutorials. Now, I can proudly say I play guitar on my own. I accomplished my goal and kept getting better playing. If I didn’t get started, I would always have regrets and what-ifs thoughts.
3. Start Where You Are. Use What You Have. Be Resourceful
Last year, I went for a short course and was responsible for managing a team of 15 members. It was quite a challenge as I never led a big group of different ages from different cultures. One thing I was sure at that moment, I wanted us to deliver, collaborate, and keep the unity together in a team.
Every team had to serve the whole cohort. We called it Physical Arrangements (PA) Week where ushering, preparation of the school audios, visuals, and things related to the events were involved. We had mission trips too.
With the responsibilities I had, I pondered on how I could deliver, perform, and fully engage the team. My team had a big goal, to create a memorable experience for everyone. The challenge, no plan was conceptualized!
So I looked around, researched online, and came up with a plan then worked with the rest of the team. The result, we achieved our goal. I realized, I transformed from being clueless to being resourceful at that moment.
If ever you face the same situation, all you need to do is, Start where you are. Use what you have, Do what you can.
I want to remind you once again that YOU are creative. It is always within you. But you have to allow yourself to unleash that Creativity within you.
In my case, it was only when I started connecting with creative people and invested more in myself. One thing that fuelled me is by reading this book called Let GO and Create. You will be surprised that the things you already do are part of your Creativity like cooking, playing guitar, and more.
Life is too short to get stuck. Don’t be afraid of what others will think or say about you. Do the things you love and what you believe in. Put yourself out there. Take that first step, followed by next, and see where it goes.
I believe in you, my friend. Let Go and Create! Unleash that potential and hidden Creativity inside of you!
